La compiutezza dell'imperfezione, la trasformazione e il gioco sono gli elementi ricorrenti nelle creazioni dall'inconfondibile impatto emotivo di Simone Bath, i cui gioielli sono stati più volte esposti in mostre di forte richiamo. Da anni vivi in Italia, ma il tuo percorso creativo sembra essere stato molto influenzato anche da Berlino, la tua città di nascita... "E' così. Crescere in una città divisa, rotta in due, così fortemente caratterizzata dal desiderio di ricomporre le fratture della storia, ha certamente influenzato il mio modo di creare." Quale gioiello fotografa al meglio le caratteristiche del tuo lavoro? "Il "Fedone". È una grossa 'fede', un gioiello che preferibilmente "ci" si regala e non "si" regala. E' una sorta di patto con se stessi, un tener fede a un modo di essere, una fede per le nozze con sé prima che con chiunque altro. Si può anche usare in combinazione con altri "fedoni' (uno o due) da indossare sovrapposti sul medesimo dito. In quel caso ciascun "fedone" porta un pezzo di disegno che si completa quando è abbinato all'altro o agli altri due." Può essere considerato anche sim¬bolo di amicizia? "Come simbolo di ogni tipo di legame. Mi è capitato spesso che queste composizioni venissero acquistate da una persona che le regala poi ad una o due altre persone per sottolineare la condivisione di un progetto o un segno di appar¬tenenza." Che materiali preferisci usare? "Lavoro su materiali diversi: ebano, argento, bronzo, oro. Mi piace abbinare materiali preziosi a materiali poveri. Sdrammatizzare un diamante o un rubino con il legno, combinare ebano, oro e pietre preziose, ride-finire equilibri per ottenere gioielli che sembrano già vissuti anche se sono appena nati, con la consapevolezza che le cose imperfette sono le più compiute, irregolari, uniche, mai seriali." Quale altro aspetto importante leggi nelle tue creazioni? "La trasformazione: una collana diventa un contenitore, uno stesso anello può avere due facce... Insomma niente è mai solo ciò che sembra. Ogni lavoro è un'idea, qualcosa da dire a chi lo porta e a chi lo guarda."

The accomplishment of imperfection, transformation and play are the recurring elements of the unmistakable emotional impact of Simone Bath's jewels, which have been repeatedly shown in highly successful exhibits. You have been living in Italy for years now but your creative development seems to have been affected also by Berlin, your native city... "That's true. Growing up in a divided city, split into two parts, so strongly characterized by the desire to join what history broke, has definitely affected my way of creating". What jewel reflects best the characteristics of your work? "The "Fedone". It is a big wedding ring, a jewel that you should buy for yourself instead of giving it to someone else. lt is a sort of commitment with oneself, to keep constantly in mind who we are, a wedding with ourselves before marrying someone else. lt can be used in combination with other "fedoni" (one or two) to be worn on the same finger. In that case, each "fedone" has a piece of a drawing that is completed by wearing the other ring(s)." Can it be considered as a symbol of friendship? "lt can symbolize any relationship. I have sold these compositions to people who Bave the other(s) to one or two more people to create a bond or a sign of belonging". What materials do you prefer to use? "I work with different materials: ebony, silver, bronze, gold. I like to match precious material with common materials. Trivialize a diamond or a ruby with wood, combine ebony, gold and precious stones, redefine balances to create jewels that seem to have a history even though they are just out of the factory, mindful that imperfect things are the most accomplished, irregular, unique, never serial." What other important aspect do you see in your creations? "Transformation. A necklace becomes a container, the seme ring can have two faces... In other words nothing is ever just what it Iooks like. L'atelier di Simone Bath (vd pag.42) in Prati non è solo il luogo dove vengono manualmente creati i suoi gioielli estemporanei, ma è anche dove vengono pensati e disegnati. Un ritrovo per gli amanti delle idee preziose quanto le pietre utilizzate. Protagoniste sono un'atmosfera e un'ispirazione, spesso perdute in gioielleria. Il contatto con l'artista è diretto e confidenziale, lo stesso che si respira alle sue innumerevoli mostre.


Simone Bath's externporary jewels are conceived, designed and handmade in her atelier (see page 42) in Rome, a piace for lovers of ideas as precious as the stones utilized. Ambiance and inspiration. two ingredients which are often lost in jewel-making, are key factors. There is direct and friendiy contact with the artist, both in this location and at her countless exhibitions.
